Artist’s Statement :

I paint almost exclusively in pastels. Why?  … I can’t help myself – I absolutely love them!   I have tried other mediums but I feel compelled to use pastels.

 I paint landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, etc. as well as portraits and nudes.

Colour and tone (and therefore light, and the colour of light) is very important to me, in both portraiture and landscape painting.

A few of the many artists from the past whose works thrill and inspire me are Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent and JMW Turner.  There are also many contemporary artists whose paintings excite me:  Max Wilks’ pastels, Ken Knight's Plein-air landscapes, Warwick Fuller's Plein-air landscapes, and a large number of American artists such as Gil Delliger, Sally Strand & Camille Przewodek . Apologies to all those not mentioned!

I hope to be able to paint for as long as I live – to be deprived of the ability to paint would be very distressing.

Private art classes mid 1996 - October 2000.
